Overview

The Barbizon school was a pivotal art movement that emerged in France from 1830 to 1870, characterized by its emphasis on Realism, landscape painting, and the everyday lives of rural communities. Led by artists such as [[theodore-rousseau|Théodore Rousseau]] and [[jean-francois-millet|Jean-François Millet]], the movement sought to break away from the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. The school's name is derived from the village of Barbizon, where many of its artists gathered to paint and find inspiration in the surrounding Forest of Fontainebleau.
